On October 3, 1962, astronaut Walter Schirra wore his own watch during the Mercury Program’s Sigma 7 mission. Thus, the “Speedmaster CK 2998” became the first Omega watch to go into space. This updated model pays tribute to that pioneering timepiece that went into space, offering a modern interpretation of the same second-generation “Speedmaster” style.
The 39.70-mm diameter stainless steel case, featuring a polished and brushed finish, is paired with a “Flat Link” bracelet incorporating Omega’s patented Comfort Release System. The black aluminum bezel ring features the legendary tachymeter scale, including the iconic “dot over 90” (a dot above the 90).
Visible beneath the new Hesalite-style sapphire crystal, the gray-blue dial is CVD-coated to recreate the tones of the “CK 2998” watch produced in the 1960s.In addition to the hour markers and “Alpha”-style hour and minute hands coated with vintage Super-LumiNova, the baton-style central chronograph seconds hand is coated with white varnish to match the transferred markings. It features a 30-minute counter at the 3 o’clock position, a 12-hour counter at the 6 o’clock position, and a small seconds sub-dial at the 9 o’clock position.
The dial and crown are adorned with the vintage Omega logo, while the case back features the famous seahorse medallion and engravings reading “THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE” and “OCTOBER 3, 1962.”
It is powered by the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Caliber 3861, the latest movement developed as an update to the Caliber 321, which accompanied astronauts into space. This watch is presented in a special-edition box, accompanied by a booklet titled “LEGENDARY MOONWATCH.”
