As fascinating as it is to watch the tourbillon cage rotate, the tourbillon's primary purpose is to improve accuracy. The tourbillon, which means "whirlwind," rotates the entire balance and escapement in one minute to constantly offset the effects of gravity.
The rotating cage of the tourbillon is cantilever-mounted, thus relieving pressure and allowing it to be realized in a very delicate manner. It weighs less than 0.5 grams. A masterpiece of watchmaking and a pleasure to behold, the tourbillon remains one of the most challenging complications.
The master watchmaker Alfred Helvig of Glashütte, whose skill and creativity have left their mark on history to this day, invented the ingenious flying tourbillon in 1920, the fruit of his tireless pursuit of precision.
